Toyota says it is shifting around its production plans as it prepares for the 2021 opening of its Mazda Toyota Manufacturing USA plant in Huntsville, Alabama.
The automaker says production of its Corolla will continue at its plant in Blue Springs, Mississippi instead of moving to the new “joint-venture assembly plant.”
Instead, Toyota will build a new, unannounced SUV at the under-construction facility. That’s as much information as the automaker offers regarding the new U.S. built SUV.
Construction on the facility reportedly remains on schedule as the automaker eyes production to start in 2021. About 4,000 jobs are expected to be created with the opening of the facility with Mazda.

Toyota and Mazda split the cost for the plant 50-50. The Associated Press reports that Mazda also plans to manufacture an unannounced SUV at the plant in Huntsville.
In the initial announcement, Toyota said the two companies will produce U.S. vehicles under the same roof, develop new technology for electric vehicles together. They will also collaborate on connected-car tech and advancing safety technologies and to create “complementary products.”

Working Strategies: Beyond the construction site – alternative work options for trades workers

In many parts of the country, the trades are “having a moment” in terms of increased job availability, better wages and subsidized training. Much of our national conversation has focused on the current and anticipated shortage of workers for these very critical professions. Without a new generation of tradespeople to replace the retiring baby boomers, employers are already scrambling to meet their production goals.
Progress has been made, but unless we’re able to convince individual students and their parents that these are solid careers to enter, the shortage will likely continue.
One thing that might help is to broaden the perspective of individuals about what it means to work in the trades. Besides learning that the concept of trades work can range from manufacturing to the building trades to vehicle maintenance to a host of personal services — (phew) — those making career decisions might be helped by knowing the variety of settings conducive to trades work.
As an example, consider those trades associated with construction and building maintenance. If asked, “Where do carpenters work?” most people would know that at least one correct answer would be, “On construction sites, building new homes.” But far fewer would think to answer, “Carpenters work for the government, for hospitals, for airports, for museums, etc.”

New construction ambassadors to help Halton Region connect with public

Halton Region is hiring two construction ambassadors to act as a point of contact between the project team and the public during major regional infrastructure projects.
Part of the public works team, the ambassadors will be responsible for dealing with regional road, water and wastewater construction projects. Halton, located in southern Ontario, plans to invest almost $4 billion in infrastructure over the next 10 years. The two, full-time positions, which were approved in the region’s 2019 budget, are expected to be filled shortly.
“It’s not a new concept it’s something that has been applied in other municipalities in one form or another,” explained Marek Braczek, director, engineering and construction, Halton Region.
“It’s also been done by the consulting industry where they provide an individual on a project by project basis… Often with larger projects, the connection between the actual project team or the contractors and the public that is being affected is somehow lost or miscommunicated, so having an individual like an ambassador that can liaison between the public and help articulate the improvements and take in the inquiries and make sure it gets to the right people both on the contractor and municipal side of things is something we wanted to employ.”
Halton Region is focused on improving the customer experience and public engagement, said Braczek when asked how the position came about.
