EEP signs deals to complete the construction of GERD’s spillways

The Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has signed two energy deals with Voith Hadro Shanghai and China Gezhouba Group Co., Ltd (CGGC) worth US $113m and US $40.1m respectively; whereby both companies will be working on civil/structural works required to complete the construction of the generating station and spillways of The Great Renaissance Dam (GERD).
According to CEO of Ethiopian Electric Power, Dr Engineer Abrham Belay and Executive Vice President of Voith Hydro Shanghai, Tang Xu, the construction is expected to step up the construction of the dam by filling the previous gaps occurred in the execution of the project.

The Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project
The Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is expected to produce 6,000-megawat which will be the centerpiece of Ethiopia’s bid to become Africa’s biggest power exporter. GE Alstom, a US-French joint venture was previously awarded US $61m to install and commission the six turbine units. Two are expected to be finalized before 2020 to help early generation of 750MW.
GERD is set to become Africa’s largest hydro power dam with a capacity of 6,450 MW upon its completion. The project was expected to start generating power with its two turbines this year but the two turbines have not yet been installed.

It estimates that total global spending on drones in the commercial market will be 100 billion US dollars over the next two years and that 11.2 billion US dollars of that expenditure will be generated by the construction industry.

Investor momentum builds for construction tech

Although it’s not the sexiest of industries, the hefty construction sector in 2018 attracted not only the attention but, more importantly, the dollars of investors.
Historically, the multi-trillion-dollar sector has been slow to adopt new technologies, as builders rely on a variety of disparate systems to manage projects, traditional building methods to construct homes and non-smart materials.
But a wave of startups is looking to capitalize on opportunities within the sector. Companies that have developed software solutions aimed at streamlining processes and increasing efficiencies are increasingly common. Prefab construction has evolved thanks to innovation in that space, and 3D printing technology can create homes in a matter of days.
Investors are taking notice. Funding in U.S.-based construction technology startups surged by 324 percent, to nearly $3.1 billion in 2018 compared with $731 million in 2017, according to Crunchbase data. While the 2018 numbers are impressive, it’s important to note that a few large rounds did take place last year and thus skewed the results. One startup alone, Menlo Park-based Katerra, brought in $865 million from SoftBank Vision Fund, RiverPark Ventures and Four Score Capital in a Series D round last January. And, smart glass company View closed a $1.1 billion Series H in November. Also, Procore, a (unicorn) provider of cloud-based construction management applications, in December raised a $75 million Series H round from Tiger Global Management.
Without those two rounds, the construction tech sector saw just $1.135 billion in funding in 2018, up a more modest 55 percent over 2017’s totals.
The industry continues to see M&A activity. Larger software companies are recognizing that it makes more sense to acquire companies in this space rather than try to reinvent the wheel from within. For example, in the fourth quarter of last year, 3D design software provider Autodesk announced plans to acquire two cloud-based software startups in the space: PlanGrid for $875 million and BuildingConnected for $275 million. Publicly traded software developer Trimble in July acquired construction management software startup Viewpoint for $1.2 billion.
Jerry Chen, partner at Greylock Partners, is bullish on the sector and expects 2019 will only see more funding and acquisitions. His firm invested in San Francisco-based Rhumbix, which has raised $28.6 million to grow its mobile platform designed for the construction craft workforce. That company, he says, had a “record year” in terms of customers and users.

Construction of 140 MW Eastern Cape wind farm commence

Construction of 140 MW Eastern Cape wind farm, the Nxuba wind farm in the Amatole district of South Africa has commenced.
Italy’s Enel, who was awarded the project contract through its renewable subsidiary Enel Green Power RSA, said the Nxuba project, which is slated to enter into operation by September 2020, is expected to generate over 460 GWh annually and will be the Group’s third wind farm in the Eastern Cape province·
Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Enel Green Power, the Global Renewable Energy business line of the Enel Group said that the company will invest US $226m in the construction of the project as part of the 700 MW of wind capacity awarded to the company in April 2015 following the South African government’s renewable tender.
“Through the start of construction of the Nxuba wind farm, which is the first out of the five projects awarded to the company in South Africa’s 2015 renewable tender to begin construction, Enel confirms its commitment to grow and strengthen its presence in the country,” said Antonio

Diversifying South Africa’s generation mix
Antonia further added that the new project reaffirms EGP RSA’s contribution to further diversify South Africa’s generation mix, while supplying sustainable energy to Eskom, and promoting the socio-economic growth of local communities.
Once fully up and running, Nxuba is expected to generate over 460 GWh per year, avoiding the emission of around 500,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. It will be supported by a 20-year power supply agreement with the South African energy utility Eskom, as part of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
EGP RSA will employ innovative tools and practices to build Nxuba such as advanced digital platforms and software solutions to monitor and remotely support site activities and plant commissioning, digital tools to perform quality controls on site and smart tracking of wind turbine components. These processes and tools will enable swifter, more accurate and reliable data collection, improving the quality of construction and facilitating communication between on-site and off-site teams.

A Convergence of Construction and Manufacturing

At Autodesk University (AU) last November, it was not surprising that several speakers representing the company, including CEO Andrew Anagnost, discussed the convergence of design and manufacturing. This has been a theme at several prior sessions of the annual AU event. However, another convergence was suggested—that of construction and manufacturing.
At first mention, this convergence might seem unlikely. Building buildings and producing products do not seem to have very much in common. Rarely is the construction industry cited in manufacturing circles as a model or comparative case for the direction in which manufacturing ought to move. However, that construction might adopt some of the concepts and technology that are transforming manufacturing is more than speculation, Autodesk spokespersons say. The trend is already underway.
What if building contractors could use robots to manufacture structural components on site in unattended cells? An example of such a cell was on display at the AU event. In this cell, a robot automatically manipulated a powered head that extruded a composite material made up of loose sediment (soil, dust, broken rock, and so on) that can be fused with recycled plastic. Artwork at this display showed how similar cells might be deployed on the moon or on Mars to build a habitat or other facilities remotely to await the arrival of a crew of astronauts from Earth. It was suggested that the raw material for these 3D-printed building blocks might be scooped directly from the surface of the moon or planet.
This trend has significance for manufacturing as well. Erecting a building is essentially an assembly process involving a great number of components, many of which are one-of-a-kind pieces designed and fabricated to fit with multiple mating parts. In many respects, a modern jetliner is no different. Likewise, the construction industry faces many of the same challenges that lie before the manufacturing industry. These challenges include the integration of additive and subtractive processes; collaboration on an integrated, fully digitalized and decentralized ecosystem; thorough implementation of automated/unattended production processes; process verification and quality assurance; and management of the total customer experience.
It appears that many of the digital tools Autodesk is developing for the construction industry have their counterpart in applications for manufacturing. Manufacturing companies should keep an eye on how the construction industry is managing the digital transformation. At Autodesk University (AU) last November, it was not surprising that several speakers representing the company, including CEO Andrew Anagnost, discussed the convergence of design and manufacturing. This has been a theme at several prior sessions of the annual AU event. However, another convergence was suggested—that of construction and manufacturing.
At first mention, this convergence might seem unlikely. Building buildings and producing products do not seem to have very much in common. Rarely is the construction industry cited in manufacturing circles as a model or comparative case for the direction in which manufacturing ought to move. However, that construction might adopt some of the concepts and technology that are transforming manufacturing is more than speculation, Autodesk spokespersons say. The trend is already underway.
What if building contractors could use robots to manufacture structural components on site in unattended cells? An example of such a cell was on display at the AU event. In this cell, a robot automatically manipulated a powered head that extruded a composite material made up of loose sediment (soil, dust, broken rock, and so on) that can be fused with recycled plastic.
